I had to go to Control Panel-Printers-Deskjet 500-Properties-ports tab and select USB001 virtual port for USB. It found the printer driver automatically. Works great. The USB to Parallel adapter works well with my HP 500 printer. My new computer (HP a6600f -- no parallel port) is running Vista 64-bit.
A great little device. Stroke of luck there.I hooked it, it worked, no muss, no fuss. Only after building a new computer did I realize there was no printer port on the motherboard. I actually didn't realize these printer port to usb adapters existed, and was shopping around for a new printer when I ran across this adapter.
I'm finding many things don't work well with Vista 64, but this one did. No hassle whatsoever. Highly recommend. I got this cable to hook up an HP 1100 to a new computer with Vista 64.This cable worked great. Windows automatically detected and installed the printer.
We were quite disappointed with this product. This cable, although I found mostly good reviews on it prior to purchase, would not work. We were trying to print from a relatively new Dell 6400 laptop (which does not have a parallel printer port-only USB ports) to a Hewlett Packard Deskjet 812C (which is not USB compatible - only has a DB25 port).
My new notebook computer did not have a parallel port and this cable worked perfectly to connect to my HP laserjet 4200.
